April 2001 - Munnar

A "hill station" surrounded by tea plantations and spectacular views

View from the resort that Anil reserved for us!
The bus from Kochin to Munnar. That's right, there's no glass in the windows. Four hours worth Bus station
Another bus station The communists go in and out of power in Kerala. Kerala has the highest literacy rate in the country - 90-99%. This is immediately obvious to us. Many people speak English and there are bookstores. Tea plantations in the hills Beautiful views
same same same While we went hotel hunting in Munnar, Duncan and Tote camped on the steps of the post office with our luggage and chatted with the Postmaster.
Our odd little hotel Tree in the hotel's garden Decorated truck The town of Munnar - that's a hindu temple in the middle of the picture. Munnar is rather a blot on the beautiful landscape.
The temple The temple The hotel Another of the "can we take a picture with you shots."
Tea pickers and Maggie Tea pickers and tea In a tea field with our jeep driver and "car boy" Endangered Nilghiri Tahr in the Eravikulum National Park.
Our hike in the National Park. Like Scotland but warmer. Unfortunately, hiking is restricted to the road. A little waterfall The inside of our jeep with our drivers Pickers on the hill. The top leaves of each plant are plucked by hand once every 14-15 days. This gives the plantations a neat look that is odd but pleasing.
