Outside the church, in a courtyard are several tombs for five sultans and their families.
Most interesting, is that of Selim II. Five of Selim's six sons are buried in the same tomb. They were all killed on the same night to ensure the peaceful succession of the eldest son, Murad III. That seems ghastly, but nineteen of Murad's sons are also buried in the tomb to ensure the next succession. (Later successions were smoothed by simply locking up potential claimants in "the cage" in Topkapi Palace rather than killing them.)
