This was a wonderful surprise. The Hudson Valley Rail Trail starts near New Paltz and then one heads over to Poughkeepsie via this old railroad bridge, now called The Walkway Over The Hudson.
The Walkway is 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long -- the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. The views up and down the Hudson River were spectacular. For us, the drama added to the views: The Walkway just popped out of nowhere as we cycled down a wooded trail.
The bridge is a New York State Park and was well-used the morning we crossed it.
